The Mistress of the Inn (originally La Locandiera) is a comedy by Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni.

Written in the mid 1700s, the story revolves around Mirandolina, 
a bright and charming young woman who has recently inherited her father's business.
She inspires awe and desire in the hearts of everybody around her, especially the
patrons of her inn. Hilarity ensues due to the antics of her hopeful suitors
and the meddling of a pair of comedians.

We at Life for the Bit are moving Goldoni's characters from a 1750s' Italian inn,
to a 1920s' speakeasy in the heart of New York City.
